According to search results on the web, some people are asking Google “Can I sleep in a storage facility?”
We can only answer for our own facilities. The answer is a certain No. Not that we are mean. Because it’s unsafe and against our rental agreement and it is illegal.
In the summer, a metal storage unit will become hotter than the outside air and unsafe. In the winter, it becomes colder. Every winter at least one storage building somewhere in the country burns down where someone tries to stay warm inside their storage unit and starts a fire to stay warm. Often, that very person ends up losing their life in the fire. All the neighboring customers can lose all their contents, which is unfair to them.
Furthermore, storage facilities do not have bathroom or shower facilities. Our customers don’t want to see human waste around their storage units. I have had to clean out a unit like that once and it wasn’t pleasant.
We limit access at most of our properties from 6 am until 10 pm to prevent overnight access or drug dealing. We do daily inspections and tug on locks daily to make sure everything is secure.
If we do find someone sleeping in their unit, the lease is terminated on the spot, contents have to be removed and the person doing that has to leave the property that moment. We get law enforcement involved. This sounds hard but we feel that it’s important to prevent someone from dying on the property, un-hygenic waste and security concerns. It may sound tempting to try and save rent money by sleeping at your storage unit but we will do our best to make sure that it doesn’t end well if you try. Our other customers appreciate our stance on that.
